How to raise awareness about your organisation

Written by Julie Jackson, PR and communications specialist for Hampshire’s third sector and mission-led SMEs

We recently conducted some research with organisations in the third sector to gain a better understanding of the PR and communication challenges they are currently facing.

It came as no surprise that the biggest concern was how to raise awareness about the organisation.

Here is our five-step solution for how charities, not for profits and others operating in the third sector can raise awareness about what they do.

  1. Be clear about what it is you want to achieve. Why do you want people to be aware of your organisation?
  2. Once you have worked out why you want to raise awareness, confirm what you want people to know and what you want them to do.
  3. Having established your message, agree who needs to know. Mass communication is rarely effective so segment your audience.
  4. By now you will have a specific goal and will be clear about your message and who it is aimed at. Armed with this information, identify the channels you are going to use to reach your target audience.
  5. Put together a communications action plan that sets down the tactics you are going to adopt, the timeframe and how you are going to evaluate success.

This is a simple framework that can be applied to small campaigns or bigger communications projects.

Please do get in touch if you need a helping hand with raising awareness about your organisation.
